Middle and high school can be tough. You’re learning new material, figuring out the social scene, and navigating life all at once. At Odyssey, our goal is to help you manage it all while keeping education a top priority. Studies show that discipline really develops during the teenage years , so expectations like being on time, attending class, keeping your mic and camera on, and being engaged aren’t just rules— they’re habits that set you up for future success.

Some of you may have tuned out already, but lean in for a moment. I’ve got a few tips to help you succeed in the virtual environment, skills that will carry over into life beyond school.

1. Get up and get dressed.

A well-known speaker once said the key to success starts with making your bed. Getting dressed is part of that same routine. Successful people prepare for their day, and dressing the part matters. Imagine walking into a doctor’s office and seeing everyone in pajamas—with no one showered or ready. Getting up, dressing, and being prepared helps you step into a school mindset. Staying in pajamas makes it way too easy to crawl back into bed.

2. Sit at a desk or table.

This one’s simple. If you’re lying in bed or curled up on the couch, you’re not giving the teacher your best attention. It’s easy to drift off, play with the dog, or sneak in a nap right in the middle of Chapter 2. A workspace helps your brain switch into “learning mode.”

3. Turn off distractions.

Sure, watching a little TV midday can be a perk of virtual learning, but not during your science lesson. Save your shows for lunch. And yes, video games might sharpen a skill or two, but playing Fortnite during math will not lead to a strong math score. Keep distractions for break time, not class time.

4. Believe in yourself—you can do this!

Sometimes the biggest obstacle is the voice in your own head. Push past it and take action. Reach out when you need help. Your teachers, engagement specialists, and support staff are all here for you. Stay on pace, stay focused, and write your own success story.

Your story is still being written, and each choice you make shapes the person you’re becoming. Choose discipline, choose growth, and choose to rise even when it’s hard. We’re here to walk with you every step of the way.

Your Worth Is Not a Number

Do your grades ever feel like they define your worth ? Does a single letter on a report card seem like it measures who you are and what you’re capable of ? You’re not alone. Many students and parents feel pressured by grades as if they are the ultimate scoreboard of success.

But here’s the truth: education is about more than numbers . Grades matter, yes, but they are not the whole story. They don’t capture your passions, resilience, kindness, or your dreams.

This is a reminder for both students and parents: you are more than a grade . Within you is creativity , determination , and potential waiting to be unlocked. Challenges don’t define you ; how you respond to them does. You already have everything you need to be successful. Sometimes, it’s just about believing it and daring to act on it !

Why We Focus So Much on Grades

From the moment we step into school, grades follow us . They show up on report cards, determine opportunities, and sometimes even shape the paths we take . Parents, teachers, and peers may not mean to, but they often make grades feel like the only measure of success.

But grades are only a snapshot, a reflection of performance on a specific set of tasks at a certain point in time. They don’t capture creativity , kindness , determination , or the courage to rise after setbacks.

Think about it: the world isn’t shaped only by straight-A students . It’s shaped by problem-solvers , dreamers , innovators , and people who refuse to quit when life gets tough. That’s something no grade can ever measure .

So yes, grades matter. But they don’t define you . What truly matters is how you continue to learn , how you treat others , and how you move forward toward your goals.

Reminder: You are more than your grades!

The Talents That Aren’t Measured by Tests

Standardized tests and report cards measure knowledge , but they don’t tell the whole story .

No section scores:

How do you encourage a friend who’s having a tough day?
The creativity you bring to a group project.
The leadership you show on the field, on stage, or in a club.
The courage to keep going after a setback.

Some of the most influential people in history were not straight-A students . What set them apart was not their test scores but their ability to discover their strengths and use them with purpose .

Albert Einstein , for example, didn’t always fit into traditional classrooms , but his c uriosity and creativity reshaped our understanding of the universe. Oprah Winfrey faced hardships early in life, but her communication skills and empathy built a platform that has inspired millions.

The lesson is clear: grades and test scores are only part of your story . True success often stems from qualities like resilience , imagination , compassion , and grit , the very things no test can measure .

Your Challenge : Think about one strength you bring to the table that a test could never capture. How can you use it this week to impact your school, your friends, or your future ?

Final Encouragement: More Than Just a Report Card

Grades may o pen doors , but it’s your determination , creativity , and kindness that will keep them open. You are more than the letters on a report card; you are a thinker , a dreamer , a problem-solver , and a changemaker in the making.

So yes, study hard . Keep striving . But above all, believe in yourself . No number can define your future , and no test can measure the greatness inside you.

Fall 2025: Odyssey Online Learning Highlights

Fall 2025 was an incredible semester at Odyssey Online Learning . Looking back, I’m so proud of everything our students, staff, and families accomplished together.

This year, we reached a huge milestone. We officially launched Odyssey Online Learning Middle School! Welcoming new students, new families, and fresh energy into our community has been one of the most exciting parts of the semester.

Our student life continued to grow in exciting ways. We added two brand-new clubs , the F antasy Football and Gaming Clubs. Students jumped in with enthusiasm, building friendships and having fun together, all across the state.

We also went on some incredible field trips. At WonderWorks, students explored hands-on science and discovery. Then we visited the Upcountry Museum in Greenville to see the Avengers: Endgame exhibit, featuring real props from the movies. And we spent a beautiful day at the South Carolina Aquarium , learning about marine life and enjoying one of the semester's most popular trips.

Our Service Club also made a tremendous impact. They hosted a successful food drive to help families in need. A special shoutout goes to Mia Bandow , who donated over 200 food items on her own! Her generosity truly represents the heart of Odyssey.

We also spread holiday cheer by participating in the Charleston Christmas Parade. Our float theme was ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas — Making Every Student’s Story Merry & Bright.’ It was such a special moment to see Odyssey shining in the community.

We are especially proud of students who serve as Charter Institute at Erskine Ambassadors Evan Sternett and Zowie Smith. Thank you for representing Odyssey with leadership, confidence, and kindness.

And of course, our most significant honor this semester… Odyssey Online Learning was named the State’s Best Charter School! This recognition was made possible by the hard work of our students, the dedication of our staff, and the support of our families across South Carolina.

Looking back at all of these moments, one thing is clear: This semester was full of growth, connection, and unforgettable experiences.

What an incredible start to the school year! We cannot wait to see what next semester holds. Because at Odyssey Online Learning, every student’s story truly is Merry & Bright . ��

As we move forward together this season, I want to pause and share how truly grateful I am to serve the students, families, and staff of Odyssey Online Learning. Serving others is a meaningful calling. It allows us to walk beside one another with compassion, encouragement, and purpose. It is a privilege to support each student’s unique journey and to witness their growth unfold step by step.

Leadership begins with compassion, seeing the best in others, believing in their potential, and understanding that true growth is a process. There is a season for identifying areas where we can improve, a season for preparing intentional steps forward, and a season for watching the fruits of our hard work bloom in their perfect timing. How to Crush It in your English class at Odyssey Online Learning!

Let’s be real. English might not be everyone's cup of tea. But even if you don’t dream of becoming the next Shakespeare, there are tons of ways to be successful in your English class here at Odyssey Online Learning. And who knows? You might even enjoy yourself along the way (gasp!).

Here are the top tips to dominate your English course like a literary legend :

1. Show Up and Shine! Attend Class Regularly and On Time

We know! Online school gives you more flexibility, but showing up and being on time for live lessons is the first major key to success. You wouldn’t walk into a movie halfway through and expect to know what’s going on, right? Same logic.

Plus, we enjoy seeing your face (or at least your name and avatar in Zoom). Being present = being prepared. It’s that simple.

2. Speak Up and Be Seen! Participate in Live Lessons

Nobody’s asking you to give a TED Talk, but don’t just lurk in the corner like a Wi-Fi ghost. Unmute, type in the chat, answer questions, or just throw a reaction emoji if you're feeling shy. The more you engage, the more you remember, and the more we see that you’re actually there and trying.

And if you’re thinking, “But what if I’m wrong?” then congrats, you’re human. English isn’t about getting everything perfect. It's about thinking deeply, making connections, and learning through discussion.

3. Ask Questions! Seriously, It’s Not Weird

Raise your (virtual) hand! If something doesn’t make sense, or if you missed something, ask. That’s what we are there for. Trust us, we’d much rather answer your question than have you fall behind in silence.

Asking questions shows initiative, and initiative looks good on everyone. Plus, lots of time other students have the same questions.

4. Turn In Your Work Like a Boss!

English isn’t just about reading and talking. It's also about doing the work. That means all assignments, even the ones you think are boring.

Get into the habit of completing your assignments on time . Turning things in late can snowball fast, and suddenly you’re drowning in deadlines. Be ahead of the game, not buried under it.

5. Need Help? Intervention Is Your Best Friend

If you’re invited to a live intervention session, don’t treat it like detention. Think of it more like free tutoring: one-on-one help from someone who genuinely wants you to succeed.

Not required to attend? You can still pop in for help if you’re confused, stuck, or just want someone to review your writing. We aren’t mind-readers. So, if you’re struggling, say something and we’ll jump in faster than a grammar nerd correcting “your” vs. “you’re.”

6. Communication = Success

Talk to us! Talk to your Student Engagement Specialist (SES). Ask questions, check in, send a message if you’re behind or confused.

We get it! Life happens. But silence is not golden when it comes to school. Keep the lines of communication open , and you’ll find a whole support system ready to help.

7. Keep Tabs on Your Grades!

Don’t spend the semester peeking at your grades like they are a horror movie. Check your progress regularly to stay informed about your current status. If something looks off, speak up early.

No one wants the “I didn’t know I was failing!” or “What can I do to pass this class?” panic moment in week 16. Stay aware, stay ahead.

8. Google Docs = Your Best Writing Buddy

A LOT of your English work will happen in Google Docs. So, if you’re not BFFs with your Google Drive yet, it’s time to get acquainted.

Learn how to:

Open Docs and format them
Share with editing access (not just “view only” Trust us.)
Use comments to collaborate with your teacher
Save your work before your computer does something weird
Being tech-savvy is part of being successful. Use your tools like a pro.

9. Missed a Class? Rewind Time with Recordings

If you miss a live lesson or just want to review, we have you covered. Recorded lessons are posted for a reason. Please use them.

If you’re an auditory learner, those audio readings of texts might be your secret weapon. Close your eyes and listen like it’s a podcast. Learning can sound cool, too.

10. Use All of the Resources We Provide to You!

Please know that we don’t just throw random links into our live lessons. We carefully select tools, videos, guides, and examples to help you succeed. Please use them.

Need grammar help? It's there. Essay tips? Yep. Supplemental readings? Absolutely. Use everything at your disposal like the resourceful scholar you are.

11. Keep an Open Mind!

English courses are about expressing yourself, thinking critically, and understanding the world around you.

You might discover a new favorite author, nail an essay you thought would destroy you, or realize you’re way better at writing than you thought. You won’t know unless you stay open to the experience.

12. Be the Kind of Student Others Want to Work With

And finally, be positive. Be kind . Be that student who encourages others, asks thoughtful questions, and actually says “thank you” in the chat.

Being a good classmate makes class better for everyone, and it makes your online school experience way more enjoyable.

While our school operates virtually, bullying can still occur in digital spaces, making it essential for families and educators to collaborate in creating a positive online community.

Cyberbullying can sometimes be harder to spot than in-person bullying. It often happens through messages, group chats, or social media posts, and students may try to handle it on their own.

Be on the lookout for these warning signs:

Avoiding school activities or certain classmates

If you’re not feeling the 4-year college route, you’re not alone , and you’re not stuck. In my work with South Carolina’s high school students, I see smart, capable teens who want to start earning sooner, learn by doing, and avoid years of debt. Technical college and skilled-trade pathways offer exactly that: hands-on training, in-demand skills, and faster entry into solid careers (Soliz, 2023).

At Odyssey Online Learning, we see many students who thrive when given the freedom to explore different career paths. Technical college is a strong option we encourage families to consider as part of a student’s Individual Graduation Plan (IGP).

What “Trade School” Looks Like Now

Today’s technical programs go far beyond “shop class.” You’ll find advanced manufacturing and mechatronics, HVAC with smart controls, welding for clean-energy projects, CDL logistics, medical assisting, and cybersecurity. Many programs pair coursework with paid apprenticeships , allowing you to earn while you learn, graduate with experience, and step directly into a job. A recent peer-reviewed synthesis finds that U.S. registered apprenticeships are associated with strong employment and earnings outcomes when programs include structured on-the-job learning and related instruction (Gallup, 2024).

Will it Pay Off?

Short answer: yes , on average, and often quickly . A 2023 peer-reviewed review of postsecondary Career and Technical Education (CTE) concludes that short, technical credentials and two-year degrees often yield significant labor-market returns (Soliz, 2023). Translation: The right program matters, but the payoff is real, especially when programs are aligned with local employer demand.

Specializing pays off . Students who take a coherent sequence of upper-level CTE courses tend to earn more in their early careers, amounting to about a 2% wage bump for each additional year of advanced CTE, while sampling lots of intro classes doesn’t add the same value (Kreisman & Stange, 2020). And CTE isn’t a track for “low-ability” students; it attracts teens with different strengths and interests (Kreisman & Stange, 2020).

Apprenticeships multiply the benefits . Registered apprenticeships combine paid, on-the-job training with related classroom learning and are consistently linked to higher earnings and steadier employment after completion, especially when the programs are well-structured (Gallup, 2024).

Our students are encouraged to take advantage of CTE and dual-enrollment options. Our counselors help families identify programs that match their students' strengths, whether in healthcare, IT, trades, or other high-demand fields.

“But Aren’t Trade Jobs Disappearing?”

Not in the skilled trades. Federal projections show continued or faster-than-average growth for many technician roles. For example, electrician employment is projected to grow 11% from 2023–2033 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics [BLS], 2025a). HVAC technicians are projected to grow 9% over the same period (BLS, 2025b). And several clean-energy technician roles are among the fastest-growing jobs in the country (BLS, 2023). These jobs are also resilient to outsourcing and often include opportunities for overtime, advancement, and entrepreneurship.

This is especially relevant for OOL families in South Carolina , where industries like manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare continue to expand. Technical careers are not just available; they are in high demand and growing.

What About Debt and Timing?

Technical pathways are typically shorter and more affordable than 4-year routes, and many apprenticeships pay you while you train (Gallup, 2024). In South Carolina, programs like SC•WINS and Workforce Scholarships for the Future can cover substantial (sometimes all) tuition and required fees in high-demand programs at our 16 technical colleges (SC Technical College System, n.d.; South Carolina Technical College System, 2022). Check your local campus for current eligibility and award amounts.

A Day-in-the-Life (And a Path that Grows With You)

Imagine that you complete your high school diploma at Odyssey Online Learning and then enroll in a one-year mechatronics certificate at a nearby technical college. By month two, you’re interning on a line that uses smart robotics. You step into a full-time role in under a year, then stack an advanced certificate (often with employer tuition help). Two years in, you’re earning steady wages with clear steps to lead tech or supervisor. ● Go for depth, not dabbling. Concentrating on an upper-level CTE sequence beats sampling lots of intro classes (Kreisman & Stange, 2020).

● Ask about stackability. Choose programs where certificates roll into diplomas or degrees so you can upskill without starting over (Soliz, 2023).

Experiential Learning at Odyssey: It’s Not Just Field Trips!

One concern students may have when beginning at Odyssey is feeling disconnected from their learning community. Odyssey strives to ensure that this isn’t the case by providing multiple ways for students to connect inside and outside of the classroom. We pride ourselves on the support we provide for students and one of the most critical aspects of that support is our school-wide embrace of experiential learning.

Experiential learning at its simplest is learning by doing. This can look like many things, including field trips, labs, debates, and project-based learning based on real-world scenarios. Experiential learning puts the student in the driver's seat rather than having a solely teacher-centered mode of instruction. It is correlated with not only improving learner outcomes but also increasing student motivation (Kong, 2021). Experiential learning can be a challenge in an online setting, but Odyssey Online has built several avenues to ensure students reap the benefits of experiential learning.

In-Person Field Trips

Odyssey offers many in-person field trips throughout the school year designed to build community, have fun, and learn all in one! Students at Odyssey have had the benefit of so many awesome field trips, including visiting the SC State Legislature, and the SC State Museum, conducting a DNA fingerprinting lab, and enjoying Frankie’s Fun Park. This year, we have already had a trip to Wonderworks STEM Day, a college fair tour, and many opportunities to come, including a Fort Sumter tour, and Boone Hall outing. All costs are covered by the school for students and families, so please make sure to sign up for as many trips as you can to reap the benefits of experiential learning.

Online Activities

Besides in-person options, virtual field trips have produced significant increases in learning outcomes and student engagement, according to research conducted by Klipper, et al in 2019. Virtual field trips provide an immersive experience through a variety of topics, whether it be touring a Civil War battle site or viewing famous works in an art gallery. Students learn through all of the senses and virtual field trips enable them to move at their own pace and focus on their interests as they navigate the site.

Odyssey Online Learning’s goal is to ensure students have opportunities to learn in ways that best suit them, so you will see activities across the curricula designed to address students’ different learning styles. Students can engage in a live workout session in PE class, practice their speaking skills in Spanish, or participate in live discussions about literature in English class.

A 2019 study published by Harvard University researchers found that students retain far more information from experiential activities than through lectures, even though many thought they learned best through lecture (Deslauriers, et al.) This demonstrates the importance of engaging in activities to help cement learning and not passively sitting through live lessons. Jump in the chat box with questions, participate in break-out rooms, dive into your Kahoot reviews and you will see the benefits of experiential learning at Odyssey Online Learning.

Reflection

Besides the experience itself, reflection is a critical component of experiential learning. In order to be effective, experiential learning should be conducted in tandem with a reflection component. This can look like so many things, including journals, surveys, discussion posts, word clouds, or even emojis or a chatbox message. No matter what form of experiential learning, students benefit most from taking a moment to reflect upon the experience and what they gained from it. This intentionality marks the difference between passive and active learning and puts students in charge of their growth as lifelong learners.

Social and Emotional Learning, or SEL, focuses on developing the skills necessary to manage emotions, build relationships, and make responsible decisions. For students at Odyssey Online Learning, SEL is essential for multiple reasons.

Fostering Connection and Community

Online learning can often feel isolating. Without face-to-face interactions, students may struggle to form connections with peers, teachers, and staff. When students feel connected, they are more engaged and motivated to participate. At Odyssey Online Learning, we offer opportunities for collaboration including class discussion forums, group activities in live lessons, online clubs, and in-person events that create an improved sense of belonging in our school community.

Enhancing Emotional Well-Being

When students join Odyssey Online, the shift to online education can feel overwhelming, leading to feelings of anxiety and stress. As with any school deadlines and projects can also be a source of stress. SEL equips students with the tools to recognize and manage their emotions effectively. Further, SEL programs reduce disruptive behavior problems and emotional distress (Greenburg, 2023). Techniques like mindfulness, journaling, and open discussions about feelings can foster resilience, helping students navigate the challenges of remote learning. Additionally, our School Counseling team is available to assist any student at Odyssey Online Learning.

Promoting Self-Regulation

At Odyssey Online Learning, there are two types of attendance- synchronous live lessons and asynchronous assignment completion. Online learners who are completing assignments from home need to be self-directed, which requires strong time management skills and self-discipline. SEL teaches skills such as goal-setting and self-monitoring, which empower students to take ownership of their learning. Your Odyssey Online Learning Student Engagement Specialist is trained especially to help you to foster your growth through the development of self-regulation skills. By developing self-regulation skills, students can better manage their responsibilities and stay motivated.

Cultivating Empathy and Understanding

In our diverse online classrooms, fostering empathy is vital. Odyssey Online Learning encourages students to appreciate different perspectives, which enhances their ability to collaborate and communicate effectively. Many classes include assignments that promote cultural awareness and empathy which help to create a supportive environment where all student voices are valued.

Improving Academic Outcomes

Research indicates that SEL not only benefits emotional health, but also correlates with improved academic performance. According to Durlak & Colleagues, SEL program participants experienced an 11-percentile-point gain in academic achievement (2011). Our Student Engagement Team, Teachers, and Staff recognize that when students feel secure and supported, they are more likely to engage actively and strive for academic excellence. Integrating SEL into the Odyssey Online Learning experience can thus lead to better educational outcomes.

Building Lifelong Skills

Research shows that stronger social and emotional skills contribute to positive lifetime outcomes up to 18 years later (Taylor, et. al, 2017). At Odyssey Online Learning, we believe that the skills learned through SEL extend beyond the classroom. They prepare students for future challenges in their personal and professional lives. By focusing on social and emotional competencies, we strive to help learners become more adaptable, resilient, and successful in their future endeavors.

Crush Your Classes: Canvas Tips Every High Schooler Needs

Canvas is one of the best and most used learning tools in the education world. Why not become a master at it to be most successful at earning that high school diploma? I’m going to provide you with some important tips and tricks to help you work smarter, not harder, when it comes to completing assignments for your classes. Best news is, you can successfully do this from your laptop or a device using the Canvas for Students App.

The Golden Rule

Your laptop is the first and best tool that you should be using when joining your live class sessions and completing assignments. The added bonus to Canvas is that there is an app that can help push notifications to your phone to help remind you of assignment due dates, upcoming live class sessions, and important class announcements. You can download it for Apple Devices or download it for Android Devices.

1. Let’s Get Organized

Your Canvas dashboard is your home hub to access all your classes. You can customize your dashboard by dragging and dropping your classes in the order you prefer. You can even change the color of your courses by clicking on the three dots in the upper right corner of each course picture. This is an easy way to color-code assignments on your calendar to see what’s due for each class. Speaking of calendars, you can add your Canvas calendar to your personal calendar to have your school and personal life schedule all in one place. Simply click on your calendar, then “Calendar Feed” in the bottom right corner of your screen, and copy/paste the calendar link to add to any other digital calendar you currently use.

2. Master the Modules

Classes are broken up into modules. Think of these modules as your units in your course or even the dividers in your binder. To complete your assignments, you will be working through your modules one assignment at a time, in the order that they are posted. If you find that you are stuck in the course, make sure you have fully completed the previous content, even if that is just reading your textbook material and answering a few questions or just viewing the course syllabus.

3. Utilize Canvas Tools

One of my favorite tools in Canvas is the To-Do List. This is a perfect way to set up a daily checklist for yourself to complete tasks. If you find yourself scrambling to figure out what items of highest priority need to be completed by the end of the day, use the To-Do List to help tackle the task. To edit and add items to the To-Do List, go to your dashboard and open the List View option to view all your classes in one column. This will allow the To-Do List to show up on the right side of the screen and add the ability to add items to it. Once in this setting, you will notice multiple features such as viewing if an assignment is past due, the link to join your live Zoom class session, the date an assignment is due, how many points that assignment is worth, and a checkbox to mark once it’s completed. To add items to your To-Do List, click the “+” button at the top right corner of the screen and include as much information that will help you best.

Extra Tips

These are just a few helpful tools that you can use to get one step closer to earning your high school diploma. If you ever find yourself stuck or needing extra support, don’t forget to reach out to your teacher directly or your Student Engagement Specialist. You can also utilize the Help button on the left-hand side of your screen once logged in. Community Canvas is another amazing resource to help you further learn tips and tricks to work smarter, not harder. Remember to take breaks often to step away from the screen to fuel your body with good food, a good night’s sleep, and movement spent outdoors. You are now well on your way to crushing your classes this school year. You’ve got this!

As we look back on the 2023-2024 school year, it's clear that Odyssey Online Learning has set a new standard in virtual education. This year has been nothing short of transformative, as our commitment to blending virtual learning with dynamic, real-world experiences has truly made waves. From in-person field trips to community-building initiatives and widespread recognition, OOL has proven that online learning can be as engaging and impactful as traditional education.

Exploring the World Beyond the Screen

One of the cornerstones of our success this year has been our emphasis on providing students with rich, hands-on experiences that complement their online learning. We organized over a dozen in-person field trips and events, offering our students a diverse array of learning opportunities. Highlights included:

STEM Adventures: Students explored the wonders of science and technology during our trip to Wonder Works, an interactive Anne Frank tour at The State Museum, and participated in a bacterial transformation lab experiment at Clemson University.

Some may feel excited about the upcoming break, while others may be stressed about final exams, projects, and deadlines. However, regardless of where you fall on this spectrum, finishing the school year strong is crucial.

It's an opportunity to showcase your hard work, dedication, and growth throughout the year. Here are some tips to help you end the school year on a high note:

Set Clear Goals : Take some time to reflect on what you want to accomplish by the end of the school year. Whether it's improving your grades, completing a challenging project, or mastering a particular subject, setting clear and achievable goals will give you direction and motivation.
Stay Organized : As the workload piles up towards the end of the year, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Stay organized by using planners, calendars, or digital tools to keep track of assignments, exams, and deadlines. Breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps can make them feel less daunting.

You Are The Driver of Your Educational Journey

Think back to when you were a child. Do you remember all the little and big things you needed help with? Someone who loves you very much ensures you are fed, clothed, safe, and happy. As you get older, more and more of those daily tasks are transferred to you to take care of. With age, we also get increased freedom to carve out our own path in life. Carving that road to drive our educational journey is no different. Nobody should care more about your education than you, right?

Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” You would not go into a battle unprepared, so why would you want to sail through your high school years without the knowledge and tools needed to ensure you come out with the best possible outcome? The important thing is that you are the driver of your educational journey. Just like you need keys to drive a vehicle, you need to follow these “keys” to set your future in motion.

Key #1 - “Regularly Scheduled Maintenance” Meet with your School Counselor yearly to check your progress and plan for the future. At Odyssey Online Learning, our students meet with their School Counselor annually to create an Individualized Graduation Plan (IGP). This is a great time to meet with your School Counselor to review where you are in completing your required high school courses and make sure you are on track to graduate. It is a good idea to have your parent(s) or guardian attend the meeting with you. Don’t be shy…. Ask as many questions as you want. The more you inquire about, the more your counselor gets to know you and the things you are interested in. That may help them make recommendations for any non-academic opportunities you are eligible for as well. Examples of these may be career shadowing, clubs, or travel opportunities. You may be asked to take an assessment that will show where your interests lie. This could open the door to filling your elective requirement with courses built on topics you truly enjoy.

Key #2 - “Seek a Professional if Something Doesn’t Look Right” Review your transcript each term, look at your class rank, and GPA. Don’t forget to examine things like your complete name, address, and date of birth. Mistakes happen and most are easily fixable while you are still a student. At Odyssey Online, you can view your transcript by logging into your Parchment account. Parchment is a website that makes reviewing and sending transcripts a breeze. You can get started with Parchment by clicking the link on our website under the “Request a Transcript” link. If you need help, please reach out to your Guidance Counselor. Pay close attention to your class rank and grade point average (GPA). These two things tell you not only how well you are doing academically, but also give you a look into how you are performing amongst other students in the same grade at Odyssey.

Why is this important you may ask? If you look at college entrance requirements you will notice that most schools will publicly post statistics such as acceptance rate, average SAT/ACT score, class rank, and GPA. When making a list of schools you may want to attend, it is helpful to know where you stand in making your list from dream school to safety school. Many employers will also request your GPA as part of their job application. Some even contract with an educational verification company to confirm the information you have provided about your school history.

Key #3 - “Upgrade With All of the Bells and Whistles” Did you know that students who attend Odyssey Online Learning can complete courses that offer a higher GPA weighting? Examples of a higher weighted course would be honors, AP, IB, or Dual Enrollment courses. OOL students can participate in Honors, AP and Dual Enrollment courses. South Carolina public schools, to include Odyssey Online Learning, follow a 10 point scale. This means that when taking a college prep course, you get 4.0 GPA points for a final grade of 90, 4.1 for a 91, and so on. Keep this in mind when you are working hard to finish those classes strong. Finishing with a 96 will give you more GPA points in your cumulative GPA than, say, finishing with a 92.

Pushing yourself to finish with the highest grade you can get is important. Plus, if you take the honors equivalent course, you earn a half point higher for the same grade. For example, a 92 in US History will give you 4.2 GPA points, but a 92 in an honors weighted US History can give you 4.7 GPA points. Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Dual Enrollment can give a point higher than the standard college prep course. The moral of this key is not to wait until you are a senior to realize you should have “leveled up” to give you an advantage. Your teachers can talk with you about the increased rigor of an honors class and your school counselor can work to schedule those classes if you and your parent(s)/guardian decide that is the right opportunity for you.

Key #4 - “Plan Your Journey Ahead of Time” What would you say if I told you to drop what you are doing right now, hop in your car, and drive to San Francisco, California? You may panic initially. After that, you would start to feel your mind racing with all the things you would need to plan a trip like, what roads are you traveling down, what are you taking with you and do you have enough gas just to name a few. Just as you wouldn’t hop in the car and drive clear across the country without planning, you also should not travel through your high school years without a road map to success. Open communication with your family, school staff, and even people you know who have landed in the same direction you would like to head is a great place to start. Maybe you have always wanted to own your own business. Talk with other entrepreneurs, ask what they did to succeed, and what they would have done differently. The same goes for a major or program at a particular college or university. Once you know what to expect and what courses and experiences you should consider, you can plan your high school years with the end in mind.

As I close, I want to remind you that these 4 keys are just the beginning of achieving your success as a high school student and the pathway to your future. Whether you attend a brick-and-mortar school or learn virtually through an online program, you are in control of so much. Don’t wait for the years to pass you by because graduation and pictures with your cap and gown will be here before you know it.

What is the difference between in-person and virtual learning?

When COVID-19 started in March 2020, I was one of those teachers who had to pivot. In my sixth year of teaching, I had my content down; I knew how to teach it and connect with my students. I consider myself the tech-savvy teacher on the hall because I had a google classroom for a few assignments. COVID-19 took everything I knew from the traditional classroom. Years later, I am in my second year of teaching for a virtual high school in South Carolina, Odyssey Online Learning. I can’t imagine going back to an in-person setting now that I’m here, but I recognize there are pros and cons to all settings as a teacher and student.

Key Differences of In-person and Virtual Learning:

Interaction and Engagement

In-person learning allows students to have direct contact with other humans. Being in the classroom is social by nature. Students can benefit from the social aspects of education, developing soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and empathy (Tur, Marín, & Carpenter, 2017). As a teacher, I could go through soft skills while teaching content. However, students were in my classroom for a semester, and while I “knew” them and spoke with them daily, I did not know all the ins and outs of all 90 students I taught.

Teaching and interacting with students in a virtual classroom differs from what you might expect. Students learning from home can collaborate much like a remote team might. There are tools, apps, and different platforms for all students to connect, learn, and push one another. These tools can facilitate interaction between students and teachers and among peers, potentially spanning different geographic locations (Bower, Dalgarno, Kennedy, Lee, & Kenney, 2015).

At Odyssey Online Learning, I can say, “Hey, who’s in Myrtle Beach today? I am in the Upstate, and it’s cold and rainy; how’s the beach?” or when talking about our congressional leaders in Washington DC, students can see who is representing them, and learn about their representative for where they live and report back to the class.

Flexibility, Personalization, and Accessibility

It is pretty safe to say that one of the main draws to virtual learning is the flexibility, personalization, and accessibility. Regarding flexibility, students can access materials and lectures conveniently, making it easier to balance education with other responsibilities (Means, Toyama, Murphy, Bakia, & Jones, 2010). While most virtual schools and features are asynchronous, some schools have synchronous times, like live teaching and testing. Another form of flexibility is where and where the students learn. They can learn from their bedrooms, a co-op space, on vacation, or at night. Regarding personalization, the virtual environment makes creating personalized learning for students easy. All students receive accommodations like translations, reading aloud, and omitting assignments without giving the teachers more on their plate.

In-person learning is much more rigid in structure as it follows a traditional model: set dates and times, set class work schedules, due dates, and ‘hard stops.’ While this varies significantly from the virtual setting, most students thrive on the routine of a structured day. Personalization is more challenging to access without teachers putting in the work. There is better personalization as technology and one-to-one classrooms become more popular, but it is not a built-in feature.

Technology and Digital Literacy

It’s no secret that the world is turning digital. As an in-person teacher, I thought I was tech-savvy but quickly learned that I needed to step up and learn more in the virtual setting. For students, especially students new to virtual learning, there is a learning curve for technology. Yes, their schoolwork is online, but how students collaborate and communicate requires a level of digital literacy that they could not have in a traditional classroom. Students learn to navigate various digital platforms and tools, preparing them for modern workplaces (Selwyn, 2017).

More and more brick-and-mortar schools are going one-to-one with their devices, and students can access phones, tablets, and personal computers. The traditional classroom uses more technology while students are physically in the school. There is a learning curve for students and teachers in this way, too. However, they are together physically, so the need for technology to connect them is less of a focus and more on how technology can enhance their learning.

So which is better, in-person or virtual? Like most educational decisions, I would say it’s up to the student and their family. While most students thrive on routine and tradition, it isn’t a one-size-fits-all sort of educational system anymore. At Odyssey Online Learning, we have students succeeding at school while working full-time, exploring a passion, supporting their families, and sometimes, just being kids.

The Feeling Of Overwhelm

Picture it - it’s 9 pm on a Thursday. You’re exhausted and feeling completely overwhelmed; maybe even a little upset at yourself. You’re thinking, “How did I get this far behind in my schoolwork?!” You find yourself spending the rest of the evening trying to figure out how your school week has flown by. It seemed so busy, yet you find you’re still so far behind in classwork. I think I’ve got a solution for you.

Would you believe that the reason you’re feeling so far behind is that you didn’t dedicate specific time in your day to completing class work? You’re probably thinking to yourself, “I attended my live class and got some work done then, doesn’t that count?”

The Impact of Time Management

The University of New South Wales conducted a study that proved that students who practiced time management skills, set goals, and created daily schedules were more likely to have good grades and less stress ((Wilson, Joiner, & Abbasi, 2021). Similarly, the University of Florida Gainesville conducted a study that proved a significant difference in grades for students who used time management skills versus students who did not (Tjaden, Rolando, Doty, & Mortimer, 2019).

These studies prove a point - effective time management (like creating a daily schedule) eliminates procrastination and stress and allows for a healthy school-work-life balance. Now the challenge is to find time to create a schedule to follow. That can present a whole new overwhelming feeling in itself, can’t it? You have to think about your work schedule, making time to eat, making time for friends and family, and attending class. Is there even any time for fun? What if I told you I have an easy trick to help?

Useful Tool to Create A Realistic Schedule

Welcome to the wonderful world of AI! Your teachers have probably been telling you all about ways to NOT use it. Now here is a way you can! AI is a simple and easy tool to use to create a daily schedule.

Let me show you an example of how to utilize AI to create a schedule for you:

Me: Can you create a daily schedule that provides me breaks throughout the day knowing I have to do the following: I wake up at 8:30 am, I have a class to attend from 10-11 am and 12-1 pm, I have 4 quizzes to complete for homework that are 10 questions each, I have to write a paragraph essay for class, I have to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and I work from 5-9 pm. My parents also need me to fold a load of laundry and empty the dishwasher. I also have to pick up my sibling from school at 4 pm. I’d like to be asleep by 10:15 pm.

AI: Sure, here's a schedule that accommodates your various tasks and commitments:

8:30 am - 9:00 am: Wake Up and Breakfast - Start your day with breakfast and some time to wake up.
9:00 am - 9:30 am: Morning Chores - Fold the load of laundry and empty the dishwasher.
9:30 am - 10:00 am: Personal Prep and Review - Prepare for your class and review any necessary materials.
10:00 am - 11:00 am: Class - Attend your scheduled class.
11:00 am - 12:00 pm: Quizzes - Use this time to complete your quizzes.
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm: Class - Attend your second class.
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm: Lunch Break
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm: Essay Writing - Dedicate this time to work on your paragraph essay for class.

4:00 pm - 4:30 pm: Sibling Activity - Spend time with your sibling or assist them with tasks.
4:30 pm - 5:00 pm: Dinner

9:00 pm - 9:30 pm: Come home from work and complete unfinished tasks
9:30 pm 10:00 pm: Wind Down - Prepare for bed, wind down, and engage in a relaxing activity.
10:15 pm: Bedtime

This schedule includes dedicated time slots for each task and allows for breaks throughout the day. Adjust the timings as needed based on how long each task takes you. Remember, maintaining flexibility is essential in accommodating unforeseen events or variations in task completion times.

You can provide an array of details in your prompt to AI. The more specific, the better. As you can see above, I didn’t explain the types of assignments I had to complete or the classes I needed to attend, and it still provided me with a schedule I could easily follow and feel comfortable about. I don’t have to follow this exactly, especially knowing that I need to travel to and from work and that didn’t fit into this schedule, but it’s a great place to start.

Feeling Crushed to In Control

So instead of feeling overwhelmed at 9 pm on a Thursday, now you can be relaxing with a good book, or video game, or finishing up a work shift knowing you can just go straight to bed when you get home. Sounds like a much better evening.
